Sunday, I wake to the sun shining in my bedroom. Tomorrow, I’ll have a new room, bed, and schedule. I purposely leave off the list of getting friends. Can’t have too high of hopes.

I know my new room will be smaller than this, and that I’ll be sharing it with someone. Being an only child, I never did that before. Maybe I’ll make friends with them.

Stretching my arms and legs, I rise from my white sleigh bed. Still dressed in jammies, I head into the bathroom and dig out the cosmetic case that matches the luggage set. My parents got me it for Christmas last year.

I sort through the makeup, cleansers, and lotions and bring everything that I use daily. Grabbing extra toothbrushes, paste, and mouthwash. Opening the linen closet are neatly folded towels that I carry into the walk-in and lay on top of the luggage. They’ll need to be packed later.

Then I stare at the daunting task of deciding what should be brought and what will be left. I told my parents that it’s a short drive to the school, and I really want to make this work because I know it’ll make them happy.

Carefully unzipping the largest piece, I pull shirts, tops, and tanks off the hangers. Then I move onto the pants, skirts, and dresses. Most of the clothing items that get packed are for spring and summer, but a couple of hoodies and sweaters make the cut, just in case New York has a cold spell. I also select a couple of jackets.

In the medium case, I choose shoes to go in. My favorite sneakers are tossed into the pile, along with multiple black heeled ones, white strappy sandals, and regular flats. Once I have about a dozen shoes, I store them into duster bags and lay them in the suitcase.

Walking over to my workout clothes, I grab yoga pants in all lengths and colors, more tanks, and long sleeve tops that I use for running.

A knock on my bedroom door, alerts me to someone’s presence. “Come in,” I say.

“Oh, you are up,” Mom says. She hands me a plate with eggs and bacon on it and sets the coffee on the dresser. “You’re packing already.”

“Yep, figured if I started now then I still have time to run out and grab a few more things if need be.” She nods. “We could still go out shopping this afternoon, if you want, though.”

“I’d like that.” She picks up a shirt and folds it. “I have something for you. It’s a tradition my great-grandmother started when she enrolled at the Academy.” She leaves the room and is back before I can fold another top and hands me a garment bag.

Opening it I find a black, silk corset with hidden pockets in the back that could hold knives. A white V-neck tank top and flares at the bottom. And a black leather duster jacket. It’s has a shimmer to it, so I know it’s threaded with titanium. It’s the only material we know of that can defend against dragon talons.
